Splitwise for a trip
Splitwise is a proven, free way to split shared costs on iPhone, Android and the web, with a paid Pro tier. Use it on its own when the trip plan already lives somewhere that works. When the money belongs next to the plan, the bookings and the packing, one shared trip that also splits costs keeps everything together.

Splitwise is the app many groups already use to split costs: it tracks shared expenses and balances, works for trips, housemates and friends, and is free on iPhone, Android and the web, with a paid Pro tier. For a trip, the question is whether you want the money on its own, or inside the same place as the plan, the bookings and the packing. Awayfolk publishes this page and is one of the options.

What Splitwise does best
Splitting money. Expenses can be shared and balances settled between friends, and many people already have an account from everyday use, which matters: the best expense app is one everyone already has. Its site lists Pro features such as receipt scanning, charts and currency conversion.
If the trip plan already lives somewhere that works, Splitwise beside it is a good setup.
When money-only is enough
A weekend where one person books the house and the rest is paid as you go needs little more than a list of expenses and their payers. If the group already agrees on the plan, a separate expense app is simple and familiar.

When the money belongs in the trip
On a longer or bigger trip, money questions are plan questions: is the dinner booked, who covered the deposit, is the bride paying her share. When the expense sits next to the booking and the day it belongs to, nobody has to ask. Having one invitation link for everything also means one app less for everyone to install.
How Awayfolk handles money
In Awayfolk, an expense records its payer and how it is split: evenly, or by exact amounts. Awayfolk works out who owes whom, and recorded repayments update the balances. Balances are kept per currency, so dollars and pesos are not mixed.
Awayfolk does not move money; you settle up with Venmo, Zelle or however your group pays. The same trip holds the ideas, the day plan, the map, bookings and packing.
Where Awayfolk is limited
Awayfolk is new, and it is a web app, not an App Store app. It does not scan receipts, and it does not convert between currencies for the settlement. If your group only needs to split costs and already uses Splitwise, keep it.
Try it on one trip
Copy an example, such as the Smoky Mountains cabin weekend, invite one friend, and record one shared cost each. You will see in a minute whether the money is clearer with the plan beside it.
