Lisbon, Porto or Valencia: which one for a city break with friends?

Three cities that often end up on the same shortlist, and what actually separates them. This page gives no prices or flight times, because they change; check your own airport and dates before you decide.

Lisbon

Hilly and photogenic, with trams, viewpoints and long dinners. A day trip to Sintra or the coast is easy by train. The catch: steep, cobbled streets, so bring comfortable shoes.

Porto

Compact and walkable on the Douro river, with port cellars across the water in Vila Nova de Gaia. Good for a slow weekend. The catch: also steep, and smaller, so a whole week may be more than it needs.

Valencia

Flat and easy by bike, with a city beach, the City of Arts and Sciences and the home region of paella. The catch: fewer hills and viewpoints than the other two.

How to choose between them

Pick the one the group can say Yes or Maybe to, not the one one person loves most. If the answers are close, let the catch decide: the steepness of Lisbon and Porto, or the flatness of Valencia, matters more than it sounds if anyone in the group finds hills hard.
