Tenerife, Gran Canaria or Madeira: winter sun with friends, compared

Three islands that often end up on the shortlist for winter sun, and what really separates them. This page gives no prices or flight times, because they change; check your own airport and dates before you decide.

Tenerife

Warm winter days on the south coast, with Mount Teide for a day of something different. Direct winter flights from the Nordic countries are common. The catch: the big resort strips are not for everyone.

Gran Canaria

Las Palmas is a real city with a beach, and the Maspalomas dunes lie in the south. A good mix of town and sun. The catch: you will want buses or a car to get between the northern city and the southern resorts.

Madeira

Green, steep and made for walks along the levadas, with Funchal as a base and mild winters. The catch: few sandy beaches, so it suits walkers more than sunbed people.

How to choose between them

Decide what the week is for first: beach and sunbeds, a city with a beach, or walking. The islands answer that differently, and the catch tells you who in the group will be unhappy. Pick the one everyone can say Yes or Maybe to.
