A Smokies cabin weekend

Rent a cabin near Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, plan one proper hike such as Alum Cave Trail, a scenic drive and evenings at the cabin. Book early for October. Entry to the national park is free, but parking for more than 15 minutes needs a tag. A rough budget is $300 to $700 per person for two nights, before travel.

A Smokies cabin weekend is simple: a cabin with a view and a hot tub, one proper hike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and evenings at the cabin. October is the busiest month, for the fall color, so book well ahead. Entry to the park is free, but parking longer than 15 minutes needs a parking tag.

The example trip below has the places on a map, ready to copy.

Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge

Gatlinburg sits right at the park entrance, with a walkable main street, the SkyBridge and Anakeesta. Pigeon Forge, a few miles north, has Dollywood, The Island and more attractions along the Parkway. Many cabins are in the hills around both, often on steep, winding roads.

Check the access road and whether a normal car is fine, especially if you are going in winter.

The classics

A hike such as Alum Cave Trail, a sunset at Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome), the highest point in the park, and the Newfound Gap overlook on the drive across. Cades Cove is an 11-mile one-way loop with old cabins and frequent wildlife. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail starts right out of Gatlinburg.

Add a moonshine tasting, a game night and pancakes the next morning.

A 3-day plan

Friday: groceries on the way in, chili and the hot tub. Saturday: Alum Cave Trail early, Newfound Gap on the way back, a tasting in Gatlinburg, the SkyBridge at dusk, then game night. Sunday: Cades Cove at opening, before the traffic, then home.

Some roads, including the one to Kuwohi and the Roaring Fork trail, close in winter.

What to book early

The cabin, as early as you can for October and summer weekends, with the bedrooms and beds you actually need. Check the cancellation policy and what the cleaning fee covers. Buy the park parking tag online before you go.

Tickets for Dollywood or the SkyBridge can wait until the group has voted.

Budget per person

A rough range for a two-night weekend is $300 to $700 per person, before travel, most of it the cabin split among the group. Food is cheap when you cook at the cabin. Agree on whether the cabin is split per person or per room, and who pays for the groceries.

What to pack

Hiking shoes, layers and a rain jacket: the mountains are cooler and wetter than town. A headlamp, a swimsuit for the hot tub, games and a speaker. Kitchen basics the cabin may not have, such as coffee filters, spices and a sharp knife, go on the shared list with one name each.

Plan the weekend together

Invite everyone to one trip from a single link. People add ideas, mark the ones they want, and the chosen ones go on the days and the map. On the weekend, the Today view shows the day’s plan on everyone’s phone.

Splitting the cabin

Record the cabin, the groceries and the gas in Awayfolk with the payer and how each is split: evenly, or by exact amounts if a couple takes the big room. It works out who owes whom and records repayments. Awayfolk does not move money, so settle up with the app your group already uses.
