Spring break in Cancún

Plan a week of beach days with a few big outings: the ferry to Isla Mujeres, Chichén Itzá with a cenote swim, and one night at Coco Bongo. Book flights and the hotel once the dates are fixed, and check every passport. A rough budget is $1,200 to $2,500 per person for the week, before flights.

Cancún is a week of beach days with a few big outings: Isla Mujeres by ferry, Chichén Itzá and a cenote, and one night at Coco Bongo. Spring break weeks fill early, so book flights and the hotel first. Everyone needs a valid passport.

The example trip below has the places on a map, ready to copy.

Where to stay

The Hotel Zone is the long strip of beach hotels between the lagoon and the sea, with most of the nightlife near its northern bend. All-inclusive hotels are popular with groups because food and drinks are settled in advance. Downtown Cancún is cheaper and more local, a bus or taxi ride from the beach.

Check whether your hotel is quiet or a party hotel; both exist, and the reviews will say which.

The classics

Beach days at Playa Gaviota Azul or Playa Delfines, a ferry to Isla Mujeres for golf carts and Playa Norte, an early start for Chichén Itzá with a swim in Cenote Ik Kil on the same day, and one late night at Coco Bongo. The small El Rey ruins sit across the road from Playa Delfines. Downtown, Parque de las Palapas and Mercado 28 are an evening away from the hotels.

A week-long plan

Saturday: arrive, first swim. Sunday: a day with nothing planned. Monday: beach, then Coco Bongo.

Tuesday: the ferry to Isla Mujeres. Wednesday: Chichén Itzá and Ik Kil, leaving before dawn. Thursday: downtown for tacos and the market.

Friday: Playa Delfines and El Rey. Saturday: home. Put the late night before a slow day, never before the 6am bus.

What to book early

Flights and the hotel, as soon as the dates are fixed. Then any Coco Bongo tickets and a tour or car for Chichén Itzá. Check that every passport is valid for the whole trip, and that everyone has their own travel insurance.

Add each booking to the trip as it is made, with the confirmation number, so it is on everyone’s phone at the airport.

Budget per person

A rough range for a week is $1,200 to $2,500 per person, before flights, depending mostly on the hotel and whether it is all-inclusive. Day trips, tickets and nights out come on top. Agree on the hotel level together, because it sets almost everything else.

What to pack

Passport, swimsuits, reef-friendly sunscreen, a hat, sandals and water shoes for cenotes and rocky beaches. A light layer for air-conditioned buses. A dry bag for the ferry.

Seaweed can wash up on some beaches from spring, so it is worth checking the beach reports before a day out.

Plan together, not in the group chat

Invite everyone to one trip from a single link. Everyone adds ideas and marks the ones they want, so you can see which day trips have the most interest before anyone pays. If the group cannot agree on the week, a date poll settles it; see our guide to finding a date that works for everyone.

Splitting the money

Record shared costs in Awayfolk as they happen, with the payer and how they are split, evenly or by exact amounts. Costs in pesos and dollars stay as entered, and the balances are kept per currency. It works out who owes whom and records repayments.

Awayfolk does not move money, so settle up however your group usually pays each other. A copied example trip starts its money in US dollars.
