Christmas markets in Vienna

Vienna · punch in a mug, palace markets and cake in an old café

3–6 December 2026 · Emily, Grace, Nate, Hailey, Ben, Claire

What makes this trip good: A different market every evening, one night at the opera, schnitzel, Sachertorte and getting the mug deposits back

Day by day

Thursday 3 December

17:30 · The Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz

The big one, in front of City Hall: the lit trees in the park, the arch and the stalls. Busy at weekends, so go on the first evening.

20:00 · Schnitzel at Figlmüller

The plate-sized one. Book a table for six; the Wollzeile and Bäckerstraße rooms both take bookings.

Friday 4 December

09:00 · Breakfast at Café Central

Vaulted ceilings and a long menu. Arrive when it opens, or the line goes out the door.

11:00 · Up St. Stephen’s Cathedral

Stairs to the top of the south tower, or the lift up the north tower, for the roofs of the old town.

Innere Stadt · culture

14:00 · Am Hof Advent market

A smaller square of craft and food stalls, a few minutes from the Freyung. Calmer than Rathausplatz in the afternoon.

Innere Stadt · shopping

15:00 · Altwiener Christkindlmarkt on the Freyung

Handmade decorations and a nativity scene. A good place for presents that fit in a suitcase.

Innere Stadt · shopping

19:00 · Standing places at the State Opera

Cheap standing places exist for most performances; check the opera’s site for how and when they are sold. Tie a scarf to the rail to keep your spot.

Saturday 5 December

13:00 · Schönbrunn Palace market

Stalls in the courtyard in front of the yellow palace. Take the U4 to Schönbrunn and walk the gardens before dark.

Hietzing · shopping

16:30 · Sachertorte at Hotel Sacher

The original chocolate cake with apricot jam and whipped cream on the side. Expect a short queue.

Innere Stadt · restaurant

19:00 · Spittelberg market

Narrow lanes of old houses and stalls with crafts and good punch. The best of them all after dark.

Neubau · shopping

Sunday 6 December

11:00 · Art Advent at Karlsplatz

A craft market in front of the Karlskirche, with fewer souvenir stalls than the big markets and a play area for children.

Wieden · shopping

13:00 · Naschmarkt on the way back

Vienna’s long food market, a short walk from Karlsplatz. Lunch at a stall before the airport.

Mariahilf · restaurant

Still in the idea bank

Plan B: the Giant Ferris Wheel

The 1897 wheel in the Prater, with its red cabins. The city from above if anyone needs a break from markets.
